Gilbert Niquay

About

Originally from Manawan, on Nehapiskak territory, Gilbert (he/him) is an Atikamekw-Nehirowisiw dancer deeply rooted in tradition. For years, he has practiced the Grass Dance at powwows and festivals, proudly celebrating Indigenous cultures.

At 15, he discovered Hoop Dance — a symbolic and spiritual form once banned, which deeply resonated with him. Today, he is not only a skilled performer but also a knowledge keeper, generously sharing his story and insights.

For Gilbert, Hoop Dance is more than an art form: it’s a sacred act, a path to balance, healing, and transmission.
