The Butcher
About
Jean-Benoit Labrecque “the Butcher” “Monique” Gilbert (he/him) is a contemporary artist based in Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal.
His passion for street dance, combined with his training in contemporary dance, gives him the versatility of interpretation sought after by creators. He has collaborated with Danièle Desnoyers, Frédérick Gravel, Alan Lake, Andrea Peña and many others. He also collaborates with visual artist Marc-Olivier Hamelin and stage director Philippe Boutin, enriching his vision of body and movement.
At the same time, he is developing a singular performative practice where queer meets archetypal, a space where the body exhibits itself, lets off steam and flirts with danger. Jean-Benoit also explores the roles of coach, teacher and choreographer.
His presence is fundamental to the Montreal Waacking scene, in which he performs solo and with his Opia collective.
