Princess Shayla
About
Princess Shayla (she/her), aka Sam I Am Montolla, is a Montreal artist exploring dancing, singing, music production, and sound healing. Starting in the early 90s in Hip Hop, by 2007 she was one of Canada’s first waackers from the resurgence and a teacher of the style with the crew The Chapter.
Soul, RnB, Hip Hop, and Funk is where she plays, rooted in her Caribbean heritage. She has been featured on the Palmarès ADISQ Radio Campus list and at Canadian Music Week 2021. As a certified sound healer/therapist with her venture Sound I Am Sanctuary, she shares events with the community.
She was in the OFFTA 2024 line-up for “Where Me and My Father Reside,” exploring Trinidadian culture in relation to her father, highlighted in residencies from B-Side, Studio 303, and La Serre. She is now an artistic curator for the CCOV (2023-2026).
