Sami Basbous
About
Sami Basbous is a Lebanese-Canadian queer author, poet, composer, and visual artist living with a disability in Montreal. His work transcends continents.
A graduate of the London Film School and a former apprentice to Robert “Bumps” Blackwell, he published his collection of French poetry, L’Ange à qui l’Homme Apparut, in 1998, followed by his acclaimed autobiography, Heal the Boy, in 2019. In 2025, his novel Heavenly Crimes was named a finalist for the Craft Literary Prize. His poems, articles, and artwork reach an international audience, while his music has been performed from Europe to Australia.
As the former editor-in-chief of habibiplz.com and a past board member of ACCM (AIDS Care Montreal), he actively campaigns for the cultural visibility of Arab queer people. Through his advocacy, he makes a major contribution to debates on identity and inclusion.
