Too many countries in the SWANA region still criminalize being a part of the LGBTQIA+ communities. These intolerable legislations still have repercussions right up to Tio'tia:ke (Montreal), where LGBTQIA+ people sometimes live in fear and isolation. Helem Montréal aims to be a place of gathering, activism, consciousness-raising, reflection, socialization and temporary safety - but also a place to foment the queer joy of our communities. Helem Montreal aims to combat queerphobia among members of the diasporas in the SWANA region of Montreal by promoting the visibility of queer and trans people, from an intersectional and anti-colonial perspective. Whoever you are, wherever you come from, everyone is welcome at Helem.
